Journey to Sicily with global travel and culinary icon Andrew Zimmern. As an Emmy Award and 4 time James Beard award-winning chef, the man behind the Bizarre Foods franchise, to name just one of his award winning shows. Andrew is best known for his captivating dives into the world’s hyperlocal cuisines. In October, he is taking you to Sicily, with an itinerary curated by him. Experience a beloved “crown jewel” of Mediterranean cuisine with Andrew. Truly a once in a lifetime experience.

In the crisp autumn air, we’ll walk outdoor markets brimming with pomegranates, persimmons and quince. We’ll forage for wild mushrooms and herbs on the slopes of Mt. Etna, and crack into golden arancini for a filling midday snack. Through it all, we’ll absorb Andrew’s knowledge and insight (there is quite possibly no better historian for any and all culinary questions) and savor each lesson with hungry gusto. This is the first time in 20 years that anyone has had the opportunity to travel with this globe trotting legend.

3 Reasons to Travel with Andrew Zimmern

Andrew’s a friendly Midwestern guy who rolls with zero pretense. He’s down for anything and brings humor and wit to any situation, whether he’s decked out to host the James Beard Awards or searing stinkbugs in the Mexican campo. What will he get into in Sicily? Buckle up, friends — there’s just one way to find out.

The Original Fusion

The long, complex history of Sicilian cuisine becomes tangible inside the island's thriving markets—don’t be surprised if Andrew dashes across busy street to barter for armloads of blooming artichokes and a few pods of cardamom.

A Slice of History

What the world knows as “Sicilian-style” pizza originated in Palermo, where locals favor slab-style pies cut into hefty squares. It’s a happy marriage between traditional Italian focaccia and the New World tomatoes introduced by Spanish merchants, and yeah, Andrew has a few he’d like us to try.

Nonna Knows Best

Sicilians tend to eat at home, spinning casual meals from ingredients bought each day at the market. Andrew can’t wait to open a window into this hyperlocal food world; after all, what restaurant can compete with Nonna’s home cooking?

Your Experience

“If you think you can find a Sicilian cannoli in the states, think again.”
Andrew Zimmern

Taormina, Siracusa, Agrigento, Palermo

“Sicilians build things like they will live forever and eat like they will die tomorrow.”

Day by Day

*On rare occasions, this itinerary may change.

Day 1: Sicily

October 28, Mon

Benvenuti a Sicily! After settling in at our hotel, we’ll meet up with Andrew and convene for a welcome reception. The local spread—a generous pairing of Sicilian of small plates and aperitivos —is the ideal introduction for 9 days of true immersion in the cultural and culinary delights of this historic island.

Day 1: Sicily Highlights

  • Welcome reception
  • Stay at Monaci Della Terre Nerre

Day 2: Mt. Etna

October 29, Tue

After breakfast we’ll load into our jeeps and head out to visit majestic Mount Etna, an active volcano that towers almost 11,000 feet over the island — and occasionally glows red with lava! Along the way, we’ll stop to forage for our lunch with the help of Andrew and a local naturalist guide.

We’ll head for, I Custodi dei Vigni where heritage vines clamber up the volcano’s slopes to an altitude of over 3,000 feet, producing delicate whites and intense, fruit-forward rosés and reds.

Following our tasting, we’ll sit down to a family-style lunch—our foraged veggies in tow—under the benevolent eye of Le Mamme del Borgo, a collective of local grandmothers who will teach us how to knead the ancient flours into a supple pasta dough for our maccarruni, a typical Sicilian pasta that’s traditionally rolled by hand and served in a wild boar sauce.

After this experience, we’ll make our way back to the hotel to recharge before reconvening for an on-site dinner.

Day 2: Mt. Etna Highlights

  • Mt Etna jeep excursion
  • Hand drawn Modern Adventure logo icon in black and gold. Wine tasting
  • Pasta workshop & lunch
  • Stay at Monaci Della Terre Nerre

Day 3: Taormina

October 30, Wed

This morning we’re off to Taormina, pearl of the Mediterranean, to explore on foot starting with its ancient Greek amphitheater, overhanging the crashing surf below. From our perch at arguably the world’s most famous outdoor theater, the views of the bay of Giardini Naxos to the south, and mainland Italy to the north, are spectacular.

But it’s not just the panorama we’re after—this small city is also known for its simple and stunning cuisine. As we weave through its cobblestoned streets and alleys, we’ll be treated an eclectic array of local favorites like involtini di pesce spada, a masterpiece of swordfish, breadcrumbs and local herbs.

We’ll have the balance of the day to ourselves. Feel free to join us us for an informal aperitivo where Andrew—an insider in the local food scene—will be happy to scribble a few recommendations on a cocktail napkin!

Day 3: Taormina Highlights

  • Taormina food and history tour
  • Afternoon at leisure
  • Aperitivo hour with Andrew
  • Stay at Monaci Della Terre Nerre

Day 4: Siracusa

October 31, Thu

We’ll head for Siracusa today, wending our way across the island to this 2,700-year-old seaside wonder that’s an intricate blend of Greek, Roman, Byzantine and North African influences.

Siracusa’s ancient heart is the island of Ortigia; we’ll dive in on a walking tour of its cobblestone alleyways — crowded with markets and temples, castles and churches, tucked around every corner. We’ll keep an eye out for fresh vegetables to use for our dinner later this evening.

Then we’ll head to Tenuta Cavasecca for a visit to its olive groves and the ancient temple that now houses vats of freshly pressed oil as it rests after harvesting and milling. Finally, we’ll head to the ancient hall for a tasting of this liquid gold, followed by a family lunch straight from the garden.

Practically floating from lunch, we’ll settle in for a meandering road trip through the countryside. It’s a fine opportunity to catch up on sleep, a podcast or dive into the history of southwestern Sicily. As a long afternoon gives way to evening, we’ll arrive at our stunning estate and punctuate the day with a casual collaborative dinner.

At the golden hour, we’ll head to Agrigento. This former Greek colony was established in the 6th century BC and was a leading city-state in the Mediterranean world. Agrigento’s magnificent Doric temples dominate the ancient town, much of which still lies intact among acres of olive, pistachio, almond and fruit trees.

We’ll drink in the sumptuous beauty of the gardens and ramble down the road for a special dinner. There, we’ll sit down for a picnic with a local shepeard, feasting on homemade ricotta and local pasta.

  • Time on your own

Day 7: Marsala

November 3, Sun

As we bid farewell to our current haven and set our sights on Palermo, our first stop will be the iconic Salt Plains of Marsala. Here, we’ll explore the striking landscape of salt water pools divided by narrow strips of land, known as “la via del sale” or the Salt Road, where ancient Phoenician salt culture meets modern-day production methods, offering a glimpse into centuries-old traditions.

Continuing our exploration, we’ll indulge in a delightful visit to a Marsala winery, where we’ll discover the secrets behind the production of this renowned fortified wine. Immerse yourself in the aroma of oak barrels and sample a selection of traditional Western Sicilian wines during a memorable tasting session. Afterward, we’ll enjoy a leisurely lunch at the winery, savoring the flavors of Sicily’s culinary heritage.

Next, we’ll journey to the medieval hilltop town of Erice, where we’ll treat our tastebuds to a pastry tasting, sampling delectable treats crafted with love and tradition. As the day draws to a close, we’ll check into our hotel and prepare ourselves for beautiful Palermo tomorrow.

Dinner tonight is true surprise and delight—let’s just say Andrew has helped us curate both the meal and the ambience.
