A Custom Family Trip to South Africa by Modern Adventure

a family trip to South Africa
Recently, we curated a custom family trip to South Africa for a family of five, where they sipped coffee on sun-drenched verandas, spent their days exploring lush mountainsides with expert guides, and wound down along the Cape's pristine coastlines. Through South Africa's diverse landscapes and our deep knowledge of this country, the family immersed themselves in rich local culture, indulging in meals with locally sourced ingredients and coastal flavors. They felt the breeze atop a mountain, enjoyed a traditional barbecue under the stars, and explored museums in private—all while creating lasting memories to share for years to come.

Let us take you there by highlighting some of their unforgettable, custom experiential moments that highlight our ability to craft custom travel:

A family trip to South Africa

A Family Treasure Hunt in the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens

To kick things off and keep the kids engaged, we began this family trip to South Africa with a day out in the Kirtstenbosch Botanical Gardens, an internationally acclaimed botanical garden that highlights the unique Mediterranean climate of the Western Cape. We curated a personalized visit centered around a family-friendly treasure hunt sparking wonder and curiosity. During this special excusion, the children followed clues along towering treetop walkways, winding through prehistoric cycad groves and alongside hedges with centuries of history in their leaves. They discovered the vibrant hues and unique textures of South Africa’s native plants, making an unforgettable friend along the way—Claude the Clawless Otter, a whimsical guide who led them on their journey to uncover hidden treasures.

playing soccer with locals on a family trip to South Africa

A Friendly Soccer Match with Local Kids

Part of our approach to luxury experiential travel is to develop ways for our guests to interact with the local culture, which we believe can unlock so much learning, personal growth, and joy.  During this trip to South Africa, we tapped into the family’s love of soccer and brought to life a magical moment by organizing a friendly match with local kids. On a grassy field, surrounded by the stunning South African landscape, the children bonded over the game and friendly competition, as their families watched from the sidelines as if they had all been playing soccer together for years. In this moment, soccer became more than a game—it became a shared passion that transcended cultural boundaries and sparked new friendships across continents.

taking a helicopter ride on a family trip to South Africa

A Helicopter Ride to the Top of a Mountain for the Father, Followed by an Epic Biking Descent

The family’s father is a dedicated cyclist; and since South Africa is one of the world’s top mountain biking destinations, we put together a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity just for him to heli-bike. Imagine you’ve soared along the banks of the Eerste River and past the foot of the Stellenbosch Mountain by helicopter, before landing at its peak. The sun shines, revealing a sea of oak trees covering the wine country below—known as the City of Oaks, or Eikestad in Afrikaans and Dutch. From here, a private guide leads you down a maze of exhilarating biking trails as you descend from the summit. By the time you reach the town, you reunite with your family to explore boutique shops, savor local delicacies, and take in the charm of local homesteads. Needless to say, he was thrilled.

an outdoor brai on a family trip to South Africa

Traditional South African Barbecue Under the Stars

After a day of exploring Cape Point and its iconic wildlife, the whole family sat down for a feast of a private, traditional braai (barbecue) in the heart of the African bush. They enjoyed sizzling boerewors, a traditional beef and pork sausage, with fragrant spices and roasted vegetables as the flames danced under a canopy of stars. Our goal was to immerse the whole family in this cultural cornerstone of South Africa where storytelling, laughter, and the warmth of local hospitality take center stage.

exploring the culture on a family trip to South Africa

Cape Town Cultural Hits to Top off this Family Trip to South Africa

With an unforgettable family trip to South Africa about to come to a close, a ride along the Atlantic Seaboard was in order for a true celebration of Cape Town’s natural beauty. For this adventurous family, we knew the most thrilling way to experience the city would be to travel by sidecar. With sea salt and the hum of a vintage World War II motorcycle in the air, the ocean stretched endlessly on one side while rugged cliffs rose on the other as the family took in the sights of the coast. Their excursion continued onto a visit to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, before a private tour of the District Six Museum. Along the way a local historian shared intimate stories of the city’s apartheid history, offering the family a deeper understanding of South Africa’s cultural complexity.
