Thousands of feet above the world, you breathe in the crisp Mediterranean air and gaze at the crashing surf below. You’re in Sicily, ancient island kingdom that’s been ruled by 13 empires, each of which has left its own enduring cultural footprint. You’ve already strolled ancient amphitheaters redolent with flowering orange blossom and bergamot, wandered market stalls and learned the fine art of pasta-making. Now you’re meeting a shepherd to sample cheese produced by his flock grazing just outside, before heading to a centuries-old vineyard on the slopes of a volcano for a flight of reds unlike any you’ve ever tasted. This is the true essence of Italy.

With us on this adventure is Mary Attea, the Michelin-starred chef behind New York hotspots the Musket Room and Raf’s. Twice a James Beard award finalist, Mary approaches cooking with playful creativity. At Musket Room, she’s measured and precise: fine ingredients like smoked mussels and Spanish ham dance across plates in arrays almost too gorgeous to eat. But at Raf’s — where Sicilian immigrants built the wood-fired oven a century ago — she evokes the passion and generosity of the Mediterranean. Thoughtful preparations transform simple, pristine ingredients into perfect meals, much as they do in the homes of the Italian families we’ll visit in Sicily next April. And we couldn’t be more excited to soak in the blooming bounty of the Mediterranean spring through her perspective.

Day 1: Sicily

April 22, Tue

Benvenuti a Sicily! After settling in at our hotel, we’ll meet up with Mary and convene for a delightful cooking class and welcome dinner. Under the benevolent eye of Le Mamme del Borgo, a collective of local grandmothers, we’ll learn how to knead the ancient flours into a supple pasta dough for maccarruni, a typical Sicilian pasta that’s traditionally rolled by hand and served in a wild boar sauce. The meal is the perfect beginning of a journey filled with culinary delights, cultural discoveries, and moments of pure joy.

Day 2: Mt. Etna

April 23, Wed

After breakfast we’ll head out to visit majestic Mount Etna, an active volcano that towers almost 11,000 feet over the island — and occasionally glows red with lava! We’ll head for I Custodi dei Vigni where heritage vines clamber up the volcano’s slopes to an altitude of over 3,000 feet, producing delicate whites and intense, fruit-forward rosés and reds.

Following our tasting, we’ll sit down for dinner and enjoy the charm of a traditional osteria at a family-run locale nestled in the shadow of Mount Etna. The menu highlights local, seasonal ingredients, showcasing simple yet profound dishes, like crispy pizzas crowned with creamy burrata and fragrant basil. Every bite is paired with an exceptional natural wine from their thoughtfully curated list, celebrating the volcanic terroir of Mount Etna’s vineyards.

Day 3: Taormina

April 24, Thu

This morning we’re off to Taormina, pearl of the Mediterranean, to explore on foot starting with its ancient Greek amphitheater, overhanging the crashing surf below. From our perch at arguably the world’s most famous outdoor theater, the views of the bay of Giardini Naxos to the south, and mainland Italy to the north, are spectacular.

But it’s not just the panorama we’re after—this small city is also known for its simple and stunning cuisine. As we weave through its cobblestoned streets and alleys, we’ll be treated an eclectic array of local favorites like involtini di pesce spada, a masterpiece of swordfish, breadcrumbs and local herbs.

We’ll have the balance of the day to ourselves. We’ll convene again in the late afternoon for an informal aperitivo with Mary at the hotel.

Day 4: Siracusa

April 25, Fri

We’ll head for Siracusa today, wending our way across the island to this 2,700-year-old seaside wonder that’s an intricate blend of Greek, Roman, Byzantine and North African influences.

Once there, we’ll stop for a visit to organic olive groves for a tasting of liquid gold—their coveted, cold-pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Made from exclusively hand-picked olives grown in red, sandy soils, they are cold-milled within 12 hours of harvest creating elegant and balanced flavors. After, we’ll indulge in a family-style lunch straight from the garden.

Practically floating from lunch, we’ll settle in for a meandering road trip through the countryside. It’s a fine opportunity to catch up on sleep, a podcast or dive into the history of our next stop: Agrigento. As a long afternoon gives way to evening, we’ll arrive at our stunning countryside estate and enjoy dinner at the hotel.

Day 5: Agrigento

This morning is exquisitely slow. We’ll take some time to enjoy our hotel and its surrounding gardens, only readying ourselves for adventure by the late afternoon. At the golden hour, we’ll head to Agrigento. This former Greek colony was established in the 6th century BC and was a leading city-state in the Mediterranean world. Agrigento’s magnificent Doric temples dominate the ancient town, much of which still lies intact among acres of olive, pistachio, almond and fruit trees.

We’ll drink in the sumptuous beauty of the gardens and ramble down the road for a special dinner. There, we’ll sit down for a picnic with a local shepeard, feasting on homemade ricotta and local pasta.

Day 6: Sicily

April 27, Sun

Today, we lace up our boots and roll up our sleeves and step firmly into the world of Sicilian food and wine. Our day begins with a visit to a local winery for an enriching wine tasting experience, where you’ll sample exquisite Sicilian wines and gain insights into the winemaking process. Following this, we’ll partake in a hands-on cooking class, followed by a relaxed late lunch to savor the flavors of our creations.

The afternoon offers free time for personal exploration or relaxation. Dinner—whether at a local trattoria or within the serene ambiance of the hotel—is up to you.

Day 7: Marsala

April 28, Mon

As we bid farewell to our current haven and set our sights on Palermo, our first stop will be the iconic Salt Plains of Marsala. Here, we’ll explore the striking landscape of salt water pools divided by narrow strips of land, known as “la via del sale” or the Salt Road, where ancient Phoenician salt culture meets modern-day production methods, offering a glimpse into centuries-old traditions.

Continuing our exploration, we’ll indulge in a delightful visit to a Marsala winery, where we’ll discover the secrets behind the production of this renowned fortified wine. Immerse yourself in the aroma of oak barrels and sample a selection of traditional Western Sicilian wines during a memorable tasting session. Afterward, we’ll enjoy a leisurely lunch at the winery, savoring the flavors of Sicily’s culinary heritage.

Next, we’ll journey to the medieval hilltop town of Erice, where we’ll treat our tastebuds to a pastry tasting, sampling delectable treats crafted with love and tradition. As the day draws to a close, we’ll check into our hotel and prepare ourselves for beautiful Palermo tomorrow.

Day 8: Palermo

April 29, Tue

There’s no better introduction to freewheeling Palermo than the colorful Capo market; as we wander the stalls, listening to the singsong calls of vendors and inhaling an intoxicating swirl of aromas, we’ll be tantalized by the sharp tang of Sicilian citrus fruits, fragrant sesame-seed loaves pulled from a wood-fired oven, savory arancini (fried rice balls) and thick slices of sfincione topped with  sweet tomato sauce.

Next, we’ll be treated to a historical tour as we take in Palermo’s stunning seafront, its terraces and courtyards a tapestry of hanging gardens perfumed with subtropical essence. After a a few hours of independent exploration, we’ll meet up again for a truly magical farewell dinner. Alongside Mary and our new friends, we’ll toast to an incredible Sicilian experience!

Day 9: Palermo

April 30, Wed

Arrivederci Sicilia! We’re off this morning after nine immersive days of adventure and culinary adventure. After breakfast we’ll say ciao to Mary, and to each other, knowing the memory of our adventure together will live in our hearts forever! We’ll organize a group transfer to Palermo’s PMO airport for flights to mainland Italy and beyond.

  1. What does the price include?

    Eight nights at unique four- and five-star accommodations;; private travel for all day trips and excursions; departure airport transfer; private tours with local guides and cultural experts; exclusive VIP access and tastings; guided activities, adventures and expeditions; entrance fees; daily breakfasts, most lunches and dinners; local beverages with meals.

  2. What does the price not include?

    International roundtrip airfare; travel insurance; transportation to the trip’s starting point; activities not included in the trip itinerary; hotel incidentals including room service, laundry service and hotel bar tabs; food and beverages not included in itinerary; gratuity for tour leader.

  3. Where does this trip start and end?

    Our adventure begins in Sicily at the Monaci Della Terre Nerre hotel. The closest airport is Catania’s Fontanarossa Airport (CTA). We recommend arriving one day early to ensure you’re at our starting point on time. On our last day, the closest airport is Palermo’s Falcone-Borsellino (PMO) airport. Your flight should be scheduled to depart at 12pm or later from PMO airport.

  4. What travel documents are needed?

    US citizens are not required to have a visa for stays in Italy of under 90 days. Just bring a valid US passport. For citizens of other countries, please check with the Italian embassy or consulate for information and requirements.

  5. Do I need to pay a solo traveler supplement?

    For solo travelers, there is a $2,700 single-supplement fee paid at the time of booking to secure a private room. These spots are extremely limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

  6. Who is going on this trip?

    Our adventures typically have between 10 and 20 guests, and our Modern Adventure Team. Our experiences are fun and inclusive and you can expect to be joined by a diverse group in terms of age, background and interests—including solo travelers, couples and friends traveling together. This adventure is for travelers age 18 and above.

  7. Who is leading this trip?

    This trip is led by an expert Modern Adventure trip leader. They’re an experienced travel guide, a representative of Modern Adventure and your go-to person for questions or concerns on the trip. We’ll be joined throughout our adventure by local, expert guides who are deeply knowledgeable with respect to local cultures, customs and history and are passionate about sharing that with us.

  8. Do I need travel insurance?

    We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance. Travel insurance allows you to seek reimbursement for your trip costs; if your trip plans change for unforeseeable reasons, or if you need to get medical help, emergency transport, and for theft, loss or damage of items while traveling. For best coverage, always insure the full trip cost within two weeks of your initial trip deposit and note that most ‘Cancel For Any Reason’ policies must be purchased on the date of your initial deposit.

  9. What is the cancellation policy?

    You may cancel 120 days or more before departure and receive a full refund minus a $1500 per person service fee ($500 of which may be retained as a future travel credit, valid for one year after cancellation). If you cancel on or after 119 days in advance, there is a 50% cancellation fee. On or after 59 days in advance, there is a 100% cancellation fee. See our full terms and conditions for details.
