Thousands of feet above the world, you breathe in the crisp Mediterranean air and gaze at the crashing surf below. You’re in Sicily, ancient island kingdom that’s been ruled by 13 empires, each of which has left its own enduring cultural footprint. You’ve already strolled ancient amphitheaters redolent with flowering orange blossom and bergamot, wandered market stalls and learned the fine art of pasta-making. Now you’re meeting a shepherd to sample cheese produced by his flock grazing just outside, before heading to a centuries-old vineyard on the slopes of a volcano for a flight of reds unlike any you’ve ever tasted. This is the true essence of Italy.
With us on this adventure is Mary Attea, the Michelin-starred chef behind New York hotspots the Musket Room and Raf’s. Twice a James Beard award finalist, Mary approaches cooking with playful creativity. At Musket Room, she’s measured and precise: fine ingredients like smoked mussels and Spanish ham dance across plates in arrays almost too gorgeous to eat. But at Raf’s — where Sicilian immigrants built the wood-fired oven a century ago — she evokes the passion and generosity of the Mediterranean. Thoughtful preparations transform simple, pristine ingredients into perfect meals, much as they do in the homes of the Italian families we’ll visit in Sicily next April. And we couldn’t be more excited to soak in the blooming bounty of the Mediterranean spring through her perspective.

3 Reasons to Travel with Mary Attea
As the youngest daughter in a big, tight-knit family, Mary is easygoing and down for anything. With her ear tuned toward fun and a heart that celebrates any opportunity to feast, she’ll guide us through Sicily’s riches, using ingredients, history and culture to show the way. Fishing? Check. Markets? Check. Wine and ruins and centuries of cultural drama? Check, check, check.

Water Sign
Born under the zodiac sign of Cancer, Mary is a “crab at heart.” She counts boats, water, fishing, and swimming among her favorite things. As spring arrives in Sicily, we’ll look out to the glimmering seas for inspiration.
The Flavors of Home
World empires, from the Phoenecians and Greeks to the Arabs and Byzantines, have left their stamp on Sicilian culture. Mary’s family is Lebanese, and she adores the Middle Eastern flavors that weave through Sicily’s cuisine — from the saffron scent of a golden risotto to the pistachios adorning a morning pastry.
Sicily is Her Muse
Mary traveled through Sicily seeking inspiration for Raf’s. Since opening the restaurant, she’s channeled that inspiration into irresistible, obsession-worthy food that critics have dubbed “elemental,” and a “21st-century FOMO generator.” We can’t wait to taste what she cooks up when she returns to the source.
Your Experience

“I’m struck by what a melting pot this island is— it’s been ruled by so many different empires, and you see those influences coming through in the food. ”
Rome, Taormina, Siracusa, Palermo

“Sicilians build things like they will live forever and eat like they will die tomorrow.”
I loved how the little things were always taken care of.
Such a totally immersive experience. Incredible.
The trip was curated in a way that provided unique experiences we wouldn't have had if we traveled solo.
Where We Sleep

Beautifully curated accommodations—we’ll relax under the gaze of a volcano in Sicily, and feel like we’re part of the island's story.
*On rare occasions, our hotels will change. Our standards for luxury and authenticity will not.
Dimora Cottanera
CastiglioneNestled on the slopes of Mt. Etna, our historic hotel blends rustic charm with unique architectural flair. Originally owned by engineer Priolo and later acquired by Francesco Cambria, the property features a restored villa, a mill, and lush hazelnut groves. Enjoy a serene retreat with a touch of Sicilian nobility and contemporary comfort.

Verdura Resort
SciaccaNamed in homage to the Verdura family, these 230 hectares of sun-dappled Mediterranean fields are the pinnacle of five-star hospitality. It is a true blend of luxury and heritage -- the perfect place to call home on the Sicilian coast.

Grand Hotel et Des Palmes
PalermoWithin the hallowed halls of this palatial hotel, we walk among centuries of tradition and artistry. The high-frescoed ceilings and Art Nouveau stained glass make our stay in Palermo more of an immediate immersion into both the past and present of the urban heart of Sicily.
