Why Costa Rica

Costa Rica’s thoughtful approach to nature and wildlife has served as the world model for ecotourism for decades. Tropical rainforests pulsate with wildlife, unblemished remote beaches bask in the sun's glow, a freshly made cup of the local coffee beans tastes absolutely unforgettable. Costa Rica is pura vida, the one and only 'pure life.'

ONLY WITH MO/AD

Jungle, volcanoes, white-sand beaches—see it all up-close, as you zip line over jungle canyons, or ride horses through cloud forests to secluded waterfalls. Soak in private thermo-mineral springs near our eco-lodges, and tube past rock-walled canyons on wild white-water rivers. And of course, take the opportunity to sip sunset cocktails in beachside luxury and on private jungle decks. Costa Rica is the adventure you judge all others by.

Your Private Experience

Who It’s For

A luxurious family getaway, an opportunity to bond with friends and colleagues — our Costa Rican retreat can accommodate all kinds of travelers.

When to Travel

The best time to visit is December thru April when the dry season gives way to sun-kissed beaches and warm weather. Many hotels shut down completely in the rainy season, August thru October.

Make It Yours

Relaxed beachy retreat? Health and wellness adventure meet-up? We’ll adjust our Costa Rica itinerary to suit your group's needs and interests, and make it the trip you’ve always dreamed of.

Day by Day

The flow and focus of our MO/AD Retreat are up to you, with options geared toward health and wellness, sustainability and family fun. Use our itinerary as a jumping-off point.

Day 1

From San José we’ll bring you straight into the rainforest, looking up to the smoldering purplish cone-crater of Arenal, the country’s most famous volcano. Get acquainted with Arenal on a unique forest hike, listening for howler monkeys and traversing 14 waterfall-adjacent bridges spanning the forest canopy.

  • Private transfer from San José to La Fortuna
  • Nature hike around Arenal Volcano

Day 2

Ride a sky tram up into the mountains, then zip line your way through the jungle over eight lines—sometimes 600 feet above the ground!—taking in volcano views as you go. Celebrate your aerial adventures back on ground at an organic chocolate farm, with a private tour that includes grinding and tasting local organic beans. In the afternoon explore the area’s hot springs, including the hotel’s own springs, or simply relax poolside with unforgettable volcano views.

  • Jungle zip-line tour
  • Organic chocolate farm tour
  • Hot springs visit

Day 3

After breakfast get ready for a thrilling float on the Corobici River, where you’ll take a (mostly gentle) ride, looking out for tropical wildlife as you squeeze through curving slot canyons draped in tropical trees and vines. Next stop is Rincón de la Vieja national park. This is geyser country, so coat yourselves in volcanic mud—great for its restorative powers, or at least a memorable photo or two. Afterwards, kick back in the hotel pool, or take hikes through its 570 acres, filled with wildlife and three waterfalls.

  • Private transfer to Guanacaste
  • River rafting and picnic lunch
  • Relax at hotel and explore nearby trails

Day 4

Today you’ll explore Costa Rica’s cowboy country at a working ranch. Hike a trail past boiling mud pots as toucans and monkeys play in the laurel and guanacaste trees. Look out for more elusive sloths and maybe even a jaguar. Follow the steep steps leading down to the stunning Oropendola waterfall, a narrow cascade tumbling into a very tight pocket canyon. Jump right in its gorgeous blue-green waters and take in the falls’ spray, then ride back to your vehicle—like any true sabanero—by horse.

  • Waterfall hike and swimming
  • Jungle horseback ride
  • Afternoon relaxation or exploration

Days 5 - 6

Hit the beach! We’ll transfer you to the beach of Playa Hermosa, on the 1,400-acre Papagayo Peninsula and what GQ magazine calls “Costa Rica’s best-kept beach secret.” You’ll immediately see why, with the dozen or so miles of gorgeous sandy coast outside your new abode, which feels like a private beach house on the world’s most stunning stretch of sand.

It’s the perfect place to snorkel, surf or just kick back in the sun on the beach’s dozen miles of sandy shoreline. Meet up in the afternoon for a private catamaran bay tour, surf lesson, snorkeling and an epic sunset. Dinner is a private banquet of freshly caught seafood.

  • Private transfer to Playa Hermosa
  • Hiking and swimming at Sensoria
  • Relax on the beach

Where We Sleep

Bungalows on tropical mountainsides, spa hotels looking up to volcanoes, beachfront bungalows on the edge of jungle—stay in comfort and true luxury, with Costa Rica’s wild side just outside the door.

La Fortuna

You can’t get much closer to an active volcano than at our luxury resort outside La Fortuna. All of the roomy suites have wide windows and private decks to look out over the green rainforest rising before you to the misty, purplish peak of Arenal.

Rincon de la Vieja

This luxury bungalow resort spreads along a lush mountainscape on a 570-acre ranch. Jungle trails, three waterfalls and endless opportunities to spot toucans, quetzals, sloths and monkeys.

Playa Hermosa

Papagayo Peninsula is one of Costa Rica’s most exclusive spots, and our hotel here feels more like checking into a private beach house. Palm trees press up onto the balcony of your room. When not relaxing on the nearby beach, lit by the golden sun, you can swing in a hammock or relax by the pool.
