Best of Sicily, Siracusa, Mt Etna, Taormina, Naples
Yesterday, you met one of Sicily’s most renowned winemakers on the slopes of a volcano. The day before you learned centuries-old traditions from a Siracusan cheesemaker; today, after waking up and sipping a perfect espresso in the shadow of Mt Etna, you’re off sailing the sparkling waters of the Ionian Sea, pausing after lunch in a quiet fishing village to stroll medieval alleys and ancient Roman amphitheaters. What’s next? Oh, just pure immersion in the beating heart of Naples with two master chefs and some of the world’s best pizza. This is Sicily and Naples as few others can experience—a rare inroad to the culinary and cultural secrets of southern Italy.
With you on this amazing adventure is Silvia Barban, renowned chef and co-owner of Brooklyn’s Larina Pastificio e Vino. Her accolades as a Top Chef contender and New York Times “30 Under 30” star are just part of her story; this trip is also a voyage back home, to where she grew up spending summers in nearby Calabria, stirring tomato sauce alongside her grandmother and peeling fava beans in the street with cousins. Italy is where Silvia’s worlds—culinary and personal—perfectly collide. This trip is deeply personal for Silvia, and a chance to celebrate her heritage and share her passion with us.
If you want to venture into iconic Italy, but do it like a local, this is the trip for you. Uncover the delicious backstory of Sicily’s and Naples’ great dishes. Meet vintners, cheesemakers and pizzaiolo chefs, as we go deep in the story behind what makes southern Italy so deliciously unforgettable.

3 Reasons to Travel with Silvia Barban
For Silvia, southern Italy is not just about the incredible food and wine, it's about passion and discovery. And sharing a lifetime of experiences here, the stories and memories of annual travels in Italy to see family. She speaks of fishing villages as if they are lost worlds and joyfully recalls seeing an elderly husband roll his fragile wife around in a wheelbarrow just to plant tomatoes.
Silvia jumps at any chance she gets to bring an American friend or colleague to Sicily and its surroundings. It’s her chance to show, not tell, the story of her life and why she became a chef—and to share what real Italian cuisine is about.
Keeping It Fresh
Whether it’s making fermented eggplant with her aunt in Calabria, or foraging water spinach that she stumbled upon in the California redwoods, Silvia knows the importance of quality local ingredients.
Grandma Knows Best
Silvia credits her grandmother for harnessing her boundless “wild child” energy through cooking. It led her to culinary school and a formative time working for one of Italy's most celebrated pastry chefs, Giancarlo Perbellini.
In Sicily, even post offices are palaces. You’ll feel that fully, entering this magnificent, palatial former post office from 1920 in the perfect spot in historic Siracusa. It’s a joy to stay here. Sprawling rooms are decked with fine Italian designs, lounges have expansive views of the Mediterranean coastline—and Siracusa’s iconic monuments, shops and restaurants are just footsteps away.
Relais San GiulianoViagrande
Set at the foot of Mt Etna, this intimate, 13-room hotel is made from a luxurious mansion dating from the early 1700s that makes any guest feel like a Sicilian noble returning home. The chic rustic feel benefits from wood beam ceilings in its alluring interiors—the perfect place to set up while exploring the area’s best wineries and a hike up an active volcano.
Filled with antiques, modern art and Liberty stained glass, this 19th-century, neoclassical villa is the perfect spot for a base right in the historic center of vibrant Naples. Most rooms come with terraces, others face the courtyard pool, and lovely staff serve wonderful breakfasts in the oasis-like courtyard.

For best coverage, always insure the full trip cost within two weeks of your initial trip deposit and note that most ‘Cancel For Any Reason’ policies must be purchased on the date of your initial deposit.

You may cancel on or before February 5, 2023 and receive a full refund minus a $500 per-person service fee. If you cancel on or after February 6, 2023 there is a 50% cancellation fee. On or after April 6, 2023 there is a 100% cancellation fee. We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance as we are not able to make exceptions to this policy in cases of family/medical emergency or cases of the trip being canceled (see our Terms and Conditions for full details).
