Explore Oaxaca's food, art and culture with chef Cheetie Kumar
Two Departure Dates
December 5 - 11, 2020
December 14 - 20, 2021
7 Day, 6 Nights
Oaxaca City, Teotitlan del Valle, San Sebastián Teitipac
Music of a meandering mariachi floats past your ears. Hand-painted ornaments hang from the ceiling, dance along with your tastebuds. Feasting family-style on a succulent barbecued goat—pit roasted in your honor—you take in the sights, the sounds, the smells. Wash it down with a bit of mezcal and toast to everything ahead: Zapotec culture, traditional flavors, thriving Mexican markets. This is Mexico in its truest form.
Sampling beside you is Cheetie Kumar. Cheetie’s an award-winning, self-taught chef who also happens to shred on guitar. Her North Carolina restaurant, Garland, is a whirlwind of Southern and Indian inspiration. She’s a prime example of embracing multiple passions and maintaining them in a kinetic and vibrant balance.
If you travel to stimulate all of your senses, this seven-day journey to the soul of Mexico is for you. We’ll meet shamans and weavers, eat in rooftop restaurants and at a local artist’s home, taste mezcal with a fourth-generation mezcalero, and relax at a colonial hacienda in the secluded mountains to feast under the stars. By the end, you’ll never see Mexico—or even yourself—the same way again.
In colorful food markets, artist workshops, agave farms, ancient pyramids
With traditional weavers and sculptors, modern artists and shaman healers
Rich mole sauces, spiced chocolate, street tacos—even toasted grasshoppers!
Oaxacan traditions, its vibrant art scene and culture, alongside chef Cheetie Kumar
3 Reasons to Travel with Cheetie Kumar
Cheetie Kumar can rock it in the kitchen. The award-winning chef is completely self taught, having studied the craft of cooking while pursuing her career as a guitarist. These days, she creates harmony in her North Carolina restaurant, Garland, with flavors inspired by her Indian heritage. Her joyful flair makes her the perfect companion to explore vibrant Oaxaca and the cross-over of Indian and Mexican flavors.
Music to Our Ears
Though Cheetie has embraced her culinary career, she still plays guitar opposite her husband in their rock band, Birds of Avalon. She also owns the venue above her restaurant, always keeping music a part of her life.
She Blurs Borders
Cheetie grew up in India, and her cooking is largely inspired by her heritage. She uses traditional techniques learned from her mother, adding a distinct, soulful Southern flair to her own dishes.
Her Cuisine Connects
Cheetie is inspired by the food she cooks and loves supporting local farmers. She believes good cuisine is about connection, and many of the ingredients she purchases in Raleigh remind her of what her mother would purchase in India.
El CallejonOaxaca City
Off a central side street, a few blocks from the zocalo and central shops and eateries, a street gate opens into a breathtaking oasis that’s our Oaxaca City home: a boutique hotel with a dozen spacious rooms blending the city’s distinctive styles. Serenity reigns in its thoughtful garden spaces, with palm trees, covered walkways and an outdoor patio bar.
Ex Hacienda San AntonioSan Sebastián Teitipac
A 300-year-old hacienda tucked away in the mountains, just 45 minutes’ drive south of Oaxaca City. Mountains press on the cacti-filled premises, where arched walkways look in toward an open, interior courtyard and bell tower. Each of the 16 rooms has been lovingly restored in a mix of traditional and contemporary designs. There are two pools (one inside, one out) and an on-site spa, plus hiking, horseback riding and biking options. The hacienda is relaxing and private, the ideal place to soak in the golden dusk with a cocktail.
