Remote jungle hikes, horse rides to cloud-forest volcanoes, luxury private tents pitched on the ocean’s edge. This Toad&Co journey immerses you in the dreamlike "pura vida" of Costa Rica.
You hear the howler monkeys goofing off by the bright blue waterfalls again, as colorful quetzal birds watch from the forest. The morning mist is rising now, over the jungle canopy in the shadow of towering volcanoes. And you feel fresher by just breathing it in, as the slow, slow drip of locally grown coffee seeps through a tiny burlap filter on your private deck. This is not a dream: this is Costa Rica, the world’s greatest eco-friendly destination — and the only nation that can justify its crowd-sourced unofficial motto of pura vida, or “pure life.”
On this trip with Toad&Co, we’ll zip through canyons, and go tubing in river canyons fed by thermal springs. From Bajos del Toro, we’ll ride horses to lush green peaks, meet up with Costa Rica cowboys on the way to Rio Perdido, then check into luxury “glamping” tents on Isla Chiquita and spend a day snorkeling offshore islands or daytripping with a local fisherman.
We love visiting Costa Rica because this compact Central American haven is dense in wondrous beauty and wildlife, and always showing us that how we travel matters – that our choices can have a lasting positive impact on the communities and places we visit. And also we love Costa Rica because every visit sticks with you for life. Join us to see why.
Here’s how you contribute to a brighter future for Costa Rica traveling with Toad&Co and Modern Adventure.
67 cents of every dollar we earn on average is spent locally. The cost of your trip has a direct positive impact on the people and locally owned businesses of Costa Rica.
We support local communities and local efforts of sustainability. We’ll browse local artesanías from the makers themselves, eat meals made of ingredients grown at local organic farms, and stay at accommodations committed to serious sustainability.
1% of all profits from this trip are donated to the Adventure Travel Conservation Fund, supporting sustainable tourism globally.
Costa Rica has been the model for ecotourism for decades. Not just for its diversity, but for its devotion to preserving it. We'll meet some of the artisans and community-based collectives working to preserve both land and culture.
In Costa Rica, pura vida doesn’t stick with its literal definition. It’s not just “pure life,” but a good-natured way to say hello, see ya later, no worries, no stress. It means being thankful for what you have and not dwelling on the negative.
Toad&Co is about so much more than clothing: We use business to spark social and environmental change; we have an insatiable passion for life’s most curious quirks and hidden gems; and we‘ll never give up on our quest for the perfect grilled cheese. From ancient ruins to modern libations, every day is an adventure when you see things from the Toad perspective. Join us as we gallivant across the globe in search of it all.
Pure Costa Rica is all about adventure, self-renewal and the power of FUN. On this week-long journey, we'll stay in Costa Rica's top eco-lodges, explore waterfalls and volcanoes, zip line over canyons, and laze on secluded beaches.
Welcome to Costa Rica! We meet up in San José, then jump right into the jungle! Our drive bends along roads that rise into lush, colorful highlands. We stop to meet tropical fruit vendors, browse locally made artesanías (handicrafts), and make fresh corn tortillas in a local kitchen.
You’ll love our destination, a lodge set amidst bird-filled forests and towering waterfalls. Cocktail in hand, we’ll prop up on outside decks as the murmurs and squawks from the nocturnal forest rise around us.
Today we wake up to sweeping forest views and breathe in air so lush it’s misty. After a breakfast made of ingredients hand-picked from the organic farm here, we explore the cloud forest – on the back of a horse. Our leisurely trek passes traditional farms on way to a jaw-dropping view of a volcano set amidst waterfall cascades.
Later, you can take a relaxing dip into your own private outdoor whirlpool or pick a nature trail into the forest, to spot colorful tree frogs and sit in peace by a bright-blue waterfall.
After breakfast, we break for cowboy country! Weaving through the backroads of the remote San Bernardo Lowlands, we’ll watch for the area’s famed sabaneros (cowboys) riding horses roadside.
Welcoming us is our spellbinding set-up: treehouse-style bungalows on the shores of Rio Perdido where epic wildlife and nature converges into deep canyons. After checking in, we’ll get our adrenaline pumping with a white-water river tubing ride past dramatic rock walls. We finish in time to rest with a drink in the hammock, as the Milky Way takes over Costa Rica’s clearest skies.
Wake to a little meditative ramble on one of the hotel’s hiking trails. Then, after breakfast, bring out your action hero! We’ll race across canyons on a ”Tarzan swing” and zip lines, then reward ourselves with a soak in thermo-mineral pools.
Come sundown, we’ll share stories over cocktails then top the day off with a specially arranged dinner on a wooden deck suspended above the river.
We’ve tested our limits, now it’s time to kick back. Next is the perfect place: Isla Chiquita, a secluded island harboring lovely beaches and serene views of the Pacific. We’ll check into our ocean-view, luxury ”glamping” tents, then explore! Hang out on the beach, go paddle-boarding, or have some fun in a cooking class learning to make ceviche.
We meet for a sprawling ocean-to-table dinner at a beloved local eatery, then swap stories over a nightcap at a low-key, thatch-roofed bar.
Buenas! It’s our last day together, so we’ve arranged options for you. Join a sea kayaking tour to spot sea creatures and exotic birds, or join a fun artisanal fishing tour, where you’ll join a local fisherman on a small boat voyage and discover a local’s view of life in the Gulf of Nicoya.
At the end of the day, we’ll gather back together for a drink and watch the sunset sparkle across the water, before our farewell feast.
All good things must come to an end. After breakfast, we’ll transfer you back to shore just in time to catch the ferry crossing Nicoya Gulf for a drive to the San José Airport. We’ll say goodbye to our new friends for now, but keep all the memories forever.
Sustainable eco lodges, bungalows in the cloud forest, luxury private tents pitched on the ocean’s edge – the best of both beauty and comfort.
