Cowboy-chic Pioneertown, Joshua Tree hikes, honky-tonk taverns, cozy campfires under a star-studded sky. This Toad&Co adventure is California's ultimate Mojave Desert party.
Glasses joyfully clink and the band’s guitar chords stream out from the open doors of an ageless honky tonk. Above, a sky full of stars blinks down in the refreshing, crisp desert night. You catch yourself saying, “this feels like a movie set.” Understandable. Pioneertown is a movie set, one originally dreamed up in the 1940s for singing cowboys like Roy Rogers and featured in TV Westerns. Today’s Pioneertown is a vintage motel renovated desert chic, stylish 1940s Hollywood meets cowboy cool, with an epic live-music venue where you might catch Lorde or Paul McCartney on stage. It’s an oasis of creativity in the heart of California’s Mojave Desert and our home for the next four days.
Join us on this Toad&Co adventure, and we’ll take desert hikes thru the poetic, jaw-dropping landscape of Joshua Trees and gigantic granite boulders, prepare dinner feasts by bonfire in the desert, and brush shoulders with some of the characters who populate the Mojave Desert landscape: chefs and craftspeople, artists and musicians, drop-outs and mystics. Locals here carry a creative mindset that blends a Coachella-like, off-the-grid vibe with a unforgettable dash of Hollywood magic.
At Pioneertown you don’t have to go far to go far. Join us!
Your first glance of the twisting outstretched arms of a Joshua Tree makes you a poet – whether you find beauty in its "struggle," or see Dr Seuss in its surrealism.
"Once you get past Palm Springs and into the desert, people start to vibrate at a different pitch than they do elsewhere." – Anthony Bourdain

This Pioneertown four-day adventure is a celebration of modern desert life. We'll sip local mezcal under starry skies, treat ourselves to a "sound bath" made by a ufologist, wake for desert yoga, and scramble up boulders at Joshua Tree.
Welcome to the Mojave! We meet up in Palm Springs then head out to explore the otherworldly landscape of Joshua Tree National Park. We’ll hike under wide-open skies to a lush oasis on the San Andreas Fault. On the way, we learn about the stark beauty of the scenery as well scramble up boulders and past the park’s namesake trees, so twisted and unique they inspired Dr Seuss’ art.
We’ll reach our new Pioneertown home in time for sunset cocktails. Our dinner here comes in a deluxe ”open-air” camp kitchen serving delicious fare. Afterwards we’ll sit by the campfire and watch the huge sky of stars.
Wake early for morning yoga in the desert, then we learn how and why modern pioneers – artists, musicians, designers – are settling into Pioneertown and nearby Flamingo Heights. Next, we climb into an acoustically perfect dome designed by a ufologist after his encounter with creatures from Venus (yep, Venus). We’ll enjoy a group ”sound bath,” as quartz crystal bowls are played by wands, offering deep relaxation and rejuvenation.
We relocate deep in the desert, for an open-air dinner backed by enormous boulders and facing out to Wonder Valley. And finish our day at a fireside chat about local sustainability efforts.
Pack the hat and sunscreen. This morning we have an option of hikes: an easy walk up to Pipes Canyon, or a more challenging climb of Chaparrosa Peak. We’ll have lunch back at Pioneertown and have a few hours to explore the film set or relax in hammocks.
Later we’ll regroup for a mezcal tasting made by a local music producer. It’s our last night, and we’ll celebrate at Pappy and Harriet’s, an unabashed honky tonk famous for cold beers, classic barbecue and a live bands. Afterwards, we’ll finish the day by bonfire under a star-filled sky.
Aww, our last morning. Wake up early or sleep in a little. To help you ease into the morning, after the big night out, we’ll set out a Bloody Mary Bar at our farewell brunch feast. Hey, if you’re still feeling adventurous, our trip mixologist offers new, personalized recipes for the ultimate desert breakfast cocktail. Then we pack up and head back to Palm Springs where we say goodbyes and part ways – with new memories and friends, and an expanded appreciation of modern desert life.
You'll hang your hat at a cowboy-chic, vintage motel on a 1940s film set in the desert.
